Candles From A-Z

By: Catherine Olivia

Making candles is a fun hobby enjoyed by thousands of people worldwide. It can also be a very lucrative hobby for some. Some very large candle companies are those that started out as a part-time hobby. The best thing about candle making is that you don't have to spend a fortune to start. Unlike some other hobbies that require special equipment or accessories, when you are making candles you can use unscented wax and whatever type of bottles you may have around the house. Most start small, and once they get the feel they start experimenting with different types of wax and with fragrances.

Candle making is a great way to express yourself artistically. You can make candles for use in your own home, or candles as gifts for friends and neighbors. Every woman loves to receive a special candle. You could make your mother a special candle for Mother's Day or for her birthday using the colors of her birthstone, or her favorite color. Of course you'd make it her favorite scent.

People have been fashioning candles of one sort or another for thousands of years and candle making was a thing of necessity. If you wanted to have light to see, you needed a candle. Each family made it's own supply of candles. Today's candles are used strictly to enhance a room, to add romance or to add ambiance for a special dinner or an evening or a celebration.

Candles come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Today, one of the most popular candles are container candles--candles in clear glass jars with lids. These container candles are safer to burn than tapered or pillar candles, as the flames are contained inside the jar. These candles are especially nice because you can place them on an electric candle warmer instead of lighting the wick. The electric candle warmer heats and liquefies the wax releasing the fragrance into the air.

Of course fragranced pillar candles are still popular as are tea light candles. Fragranced pillar candles make wonderful table centerpieces, as do tea light candles floating magically in water. There is a never ending variety of candle holders such as candle sticks and tealight candle holders, wrought iron candle holders and candle wall sconces. Some of these candle holders are works of art unto themselves and can beautifully illuminate a room, while allowing the candle to add a lovely fragrance.

It doesn't matter which style of candle is your favorite; you'll be able to find a lovely candle holder for it. If you like pillar candles or tea light candles, you can find lovely candle holders of wrought iron, glass, plastic, wood, or metal. You can find candle wall sconces in many different styles to enhance your home. These candle wall sconces are a lovely and decorative and a safe way to be able to enjoy candles in your home.

If you're ecologically minded or if you or any members of your family have any breathing or health concerns, you may want to look into purchasing all natural soy wax candles over paraffin wax candles. With the push towards being green so popular today,, many home hobby candle makers and large candle manufacturers are using all natural soy wax to make candles. All natural soy wax burns pure, releasing no toxins in the air. Soy wax also burns cooler than paraffin wax. Soy wax candles do not soot as paraffin candles do.

When you shop around for candles you'll also see a wide range of prices. In most cases, you do get what you pay for. We've all purchased cheap candles and have been disappointed in the fragrance. Candles such as White Barn, Classic Candles ScentSations and Yankee Candles use high quality scenting agents. This is one big difference. These candles will also emit the fragrance as strongly at the end as it does at the beginning. This is because these candle manufacturers pride themselves on the quality of their candles.
