“My hands make burdens light.” This is a saying that I have taught my children. Whenever there is complaining or twisted faces over chores, errands, or favors I remind them to say aloud, “My hands make YOUR burdens light, Mom.” I remind them how much they help me and what a blessing it is for me when they do. While I am working on meals, sewing clothes, organizing cupboards, and so forth, occasionally a couple of my children gather around me to watch while I work. I remind them that I am working for our family. My hands doing this work make your stresses light and your tummies full. As a wife, my hands can relief my husband of extra responsibilities. My hands can soothe a sobbing child by wiping away her tears and smoothing her moist hair behind her ears. My hands can reassure. My hands can lift away burdens with the help and service that they give. Helping Hands By: Della Adams Leitner The little hands so helpless That clasp your own today; The little feet uncertain That trust your leading way- You feel in their dependence Responsibility To guide them and protect them Till they are strong and free. The years are swift in passing- Like reels of fill they go; Time comes when aging footsteps Are tottering and slow; It may be in that distance When your own strength shall fail These hands will keep you steady Along life’s sunset trail. Remember that hands can make burdens light with the loads they can carry. Others will benefit from our service and the hands that give.
