Principles in Finding a Legitimate Home Busienss

By: Filoiann Wiedenhoff

Do legitimate home businesses really exist? This is a question many new work at home entrepreneur hopeful's often ask themselves and with good reason. I don't have to explain the purpose of the question, anyone who either has email or internet experience is inundated with advertisements and promos that are linked to questionable companies.

If you want to know how to find a legitimate home business the best place to start is to take a deeper look at word the word "legitimate" really means and go from there. It may sound like a waist of time but as you will see, it actually gives you three criteria that will help you better define your legitimate home business search; for a business that is honest and forthright and worth the investment.

The definition for the word legitimate in the Webster's Online Dictionary means:

1. Lawfully begotten

2. Being exactly as promised

3. Neither spurious nor false

Let's look at each of these definitions more carefully to see what they mean and how they apply when looking at a home business. In doing this we will find out exactly what a legitimate business is and what it isn't.

1. Lawfully begotten - Is it legal? The word lawfully begotten means something that is produced or created legally. I can't tell you how many times I have received scam letters in my email box of companies that are claiming to be real but it's obvious that they are not. They have made up names, locations and addresses that don't exist. Find out if they are legitimate by checking out their names, and addresses. Check if they are listed in the Better Business Bureau and do research on the internet under "Online Scams" and "Internet Scams". You'll be glad you did.

2. Being exactly as promised - Is it on the up and up? The key word in this definition is "Exactly". Something that is "exact" means that something is entirely, all together, in measure, manner or degree the same. In describing how a home business is being "exactly as promised" meaning that what they are pledging, promising, or providing whether in service or deed that they will do entirely and all together exactly what they said they would do, not partly, not mainly but exactly. If they don't deliver exactly what they say they would I would question their work ethics and wouldn't work for them.

A company that is "lawfully begotten" can still be illegitimate by offering misleading promises. They say sentences like, "All you have to do is type and you will get paid every two weeks". This is misleading because the truth is, they only get paid when they market their own ads and hope that somebody buys their product, and then they will get paid. They were misleading because they did not fulfill their promise that they proposed in their original promo ad and that is considered illegitimate.

3. Neither spurious nor false - Is it truthful? The word spurious simply means illegitimate and false we know of course mean something that is not true. In looking at a home business we need to see if there are inconsistencies or promises that are untrue in who they are and what they do. For example: There are some online home businesses in particular, that are asking you to pay almost $1000 dollars to sign up for their business, promising their products sell a fortune when the truth is you pay them $1000 to use the same advertisement to ask others to pay you $1000.... and they call that a successful legitimate home business. Please don't fall for this one, you get scammed and then you end up scamming others. You may make some money out of it but the question then is, can you live with yourself doing it?`

My advice to you is, in your search try not to use one criterion when finding a legitimate home business, but use all three. Do mental check lists and if a company sounds shady don't buy into it, keep your eyes wide opened.

After reading this you may still have one question, "What if they don't offer any real details about their business and want you to pay first before they will share any information with you?" The answer is simple; a legitimate home business has nothing to hide. Usually when a company is secretive about their business it means that if you knew what it was you wouldn't want to buy into it.

Two more important elements to use in your search is good old common sense and wise judgment; if it looks like a fish, smells like a fish and feels like a fish it probably is a fish.

I hope this tidbit of information helps you find the legitimate home business you are looking for. Happy Hunting!

Best Wishes,
