THE MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF GOOD FATS

By: Echinacea

Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s) are so important for the health of the mind and body, but there are different types of fats and oils to consume. Which ones should we choose?

In general, they are all good for cholesterol, high blood pressure, cardiovascular, brain and skin health. Also inflammation, diabetes, ADHD, sexual health and weight loss can be helped by these good fats. Your brain alone should contain 40-60 % EFA’s. They are needed for hormone production, for the immune system, nerve and eye health and each type has its specific characteristics.

Flax oil of course is the most talked about oil, as it contains the richest source of Omega 3 (54%). Also containing carotenoids, it should not be used exclusively for longer than 4 months. You can take the oil in a protein drink, or grind the seeds into flax meal and put in on your cereal.

Raw nuts and seeds contain EFA’s, fiber and protein. Pumpkin oil has been used for centuries in India, Eastern Europe and the Americas. It contains mostly Omega 6 and 9. Pumpkin oil is good for the health of the sex organs, the bladder and the prostate gland in men.

Sesame oil contains a natural preservative, alot of Omega 9 and is a staple in the Middle East. It is good for cholesterol health and for energy.

Sunflower Oil is mostly Omega 6 (71%), also containing Vitamin E. It is good for healing and for circulation.

Borage oil, like Evening Primrose oil is high in GLA, which is needed for hormone production and milk production in new mothers. These oils contain mostly Omega 6, so they should not be used exclusively for long periods of time. They are taken for PMS, menopause, inflammation, blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, ADHD and skin problems such as Eczema.

Hemp oil, by itself, is the most balanced for the human body; it contains no THC. It is also high in protein. It is the one oil you could take long term if you wanted to eat no other oil and not throw your body’s oil ratio out of balance.

Fish oils contain DHA and EPA; these are needed for baby’s brain development in the womb, for arteries, cardiovascular, cholesterol, hormones, adrenals, nerves and sex hormone health. They can lower the incidence of stroke and heart attack when combined with other healthy practices.

In order to use EFA’s properly you must make sure that your diet contains a few co-factors such as: Zinc, Magnesium, Vitamin C and the B Vitamins, especially B3 and B6. These vitamins and minerals must be in your body to use EFA’s properly.

These good fats should be eaten every day as part of your Carbohydrates, Proteins and Fats. When you crave the bad fats (fries, chips, etc.), your body is telling you it needs EFA’s. After you begin to consume these EFA’s you will start to notice less cravings for the bad fats. Combine these fats with proteins and you will feel more full and consume less junk food, causing a gradual, natural weight loss. Good fats nourish and protect the body; they help to keep you young. Good fats are essential to the body.
