The Importance of Other People’s Business Cards

By: Colleen Davis

Any person who invested money into business card printing is likely to always carry one of those business cards around with them. You never know when the right opportunity will come along to hand someone your card, and you never want to be without when someone does ask you about your company.

However, something a lot of people overlook is the benefit of carrying other people’s business cards around with you as well.

Why would this be important at all?

First and foremost you’re provided with a potential conversation starter depending on the situation.

To give an example, just last year I was waiting in an airport when I overheard two people talking about getting their taxes done. One of the guys complained about not knowing how trustworthy an accountant is and he didn’t know anyone who could recommend one.

Well, I had always been pleased with my accountant, and I happened to have one of his business cards on me. I introduced myself to the two of them and handed them my accountant’s business card.

From there we continued to talk for the next hour before the plane started boarding, and during the conversation I ended up handing them one of my color business cards as well.

When it comes to self-promoting it’s always important to be able to talk to as many people as possible. Business card printing won’t help you at all if you can’t talk to people enough to even get them to look at the business card to begin with.

You need to jump at every opportunity you see to get a conversation started, because you never know what direction it’s going to turn and you never know when that opportunity will come along to hand someone your card.

Also, you’re leaving them with a good impression of you. In the context of the situation I mentioned I was able to provide them with useful information and a business card so that they could easily remember the accountant. That means when I hand them my card they already know I’m a helpful person.

Plus, by having the card it shows I come prepared. I had all the information I needed on me at all times in order to be as helpful as possible. Not only did they come away from the conversation with my color business card, but I’d hope they came away from it with a good impression of me as well.

Promoting yourself isn’t always an easy thing, and you have to get yourself used to being prepared to at a second’s notice. Carrying some business cards from other companies can be a great way of breaking the ice and getting a potential lead. For the small business owner, every little thing counts.
